First "underwater" demo for my students...

First try for this demo today... a bit stressful, but fun once "in the water", as no practice before and not my kind of subject.  As I had to do a second demo in the afternoon I then felt more spontaneous. It's not finished yet but my recommendation could be; don't hesitate to try to paint the same subject several times trying to perfect the method and strokes.

Composition research...

It has been a sad week here in Paris, things are different lately and it feels like it will stay like that. But how could Paris or the french ever change? We should't worry about that, they are too traditional and stubborn. I also realize how much I like my town and country, this has become my home after all. But this blog is not for any subject so I better get focused...
... this week I have in particular tried to make my students understand the importance of composition researches before painting. We usually start with the most obvious and less original possibility regarding the composition. But you can avoid this with an exercise. Good ideas come with a little research, by sketching different compositions. Keep them small and simple. Sometimes I let myself into details when doing these sketches, but that's not necessary. Only values and flat shapes are enough. You should also avoid equal quantities of darks, mid tones and light. Keep one of the three for small quantities or just accents to make contrast. Use the grid of thirds and try to include diagonals or lines and any point of view or distance. It can also help you to plan your soft or sharp edges and find the points of interest or focal point areas with or without contrast etc.

"Apples in plastic bag"...

 (watercolor, size 30x40cm )

Next year France is supposed to stop using plastic bags. I wonder how that will turn out (hope better than everything else). What will they replace them with? We better bring our own shopping bags (several) where ever we go. I have one, but it's not practical to put in my handbag in case I decide to buy a few apples somewhere. I better figure out a good idea.
These apples here were the best I ever had to eat, in my memory, until they turned red and soft. Slightly green, just picked from the tree, they offered an explosion in your mouth full of sweet and fresh juice with just a hint of acid. No pesticide no wax to worry about, only the plastic bag still...

Figure drawing session part II...

Figure drawing session...

A few studies from figure drawing session and a few words with those :
I didn't learn to draw with "academic science". The few times I did draw the "cubic like" figures, to search for shape and proportions, I never insisted enough because it felt totally wrong to me.
I rather try to observe as much as possible while I compare sizes, shapes or lines with each other together with the external shapes, of the human body. While I do my pencil is moving on the paper, or waiting for information to move in the right direction from what was observed. This means that I sometimes get things wrong, but I hope my drawings gain in personality this way, if I keep up with drawing through years to come.
These are shorter poses, the longer are to come, even though never more than 20 minutes. When time is offered I try to draw bigger than this (these are around A4) and or developing details. When I go bigger I use to gain in expression in the line work, as I go faster with more energy.
Thank you for reading until here!
