Exploration... of humidity, paper, technique and subject...
December 01, 2017
Still life with done for students starting with the negative spaces (back ground), saving shapes of subjects. Before it dries, let the background color come in and make the first layers of shadow shapes while blurring contours on subjects (the pot and leaves). We can speed down and lay the colors on objects and if needed reinforce shadows, colors again or even background when dry. Make the main point of interest more obvious by adding contrast in color and contours. (This was a fast demo to get a loose feel of execution and result, the irregular background can be avoided if painting more carefully paying attention to quantity of color, water and paper humidity.) My students tend to be cautious and stiff while painting, this way of painting can help to loosen things up.
Below is the same kind in blue, monochrome still, also done in class a few sessions earlier. Great results and visual effect can be obtained with this exercice and when done without drawing you get the most out of it. Good luck !

Hello, I'm not very updated on my blog, compared to Instagram where it's so much easier to show latest news, so to catch up here are two studies done of lemons with their leaves. They are done a few weeks ago and painted after slow drawing sessions from observation so too loosen up I painted without drawing and fast when putting first washes down, when that is dry I tend to slow down a little when adding shadows with second and third layers, but I still have the feeling of the first washes. You can also stay with only one go and one layer of course.
I recommend anyone to paint directly or draw directly with a ballpoint pen or any material that takes away the security when painting. You won't be afraid to mess up your paintings when getting used to it. Just paint no pain !
(50x32cm, paper is white, sorry for bad pictures!)

I was in such a good shape to work ten days ago it was smooth and easy, then a phone call changed the following week and no time left to work... now another serious trouble came up, with a complicated period emotion wise but through which I hope I will stay strong and able to work anyway. It's the only way to get things done. Stay strong and focused, get other things out of our head. Here is a little doodle sketch in my sketchbook, no drawing just painting is the best advice I could get those who want to loosen up there sketches.

Just trying to catch the mood of the light and day with sketches like these. Here views towards "Ile au Benitier" and "Rivière Noir" on the top and "La Gaulette village" at the bottom.

I've been finishing installation in my new workspace lately and I'm slowly getting used it, with new feelings and moods. Mostly happy and contente ones and my optimism is growing each date. Must get disciplined with wake up hour to get a maximum out of the day to also have enough peace in mind to do everything including going out to get air. Twice this week it turned out complicated (only got to the bakery in the evening (!)) so I can improve on that. Improve on getting effective, which seems much more reachable now.
Here is a watercolor I did as a try this afternoon, things could be developed on it but I prefer to leave it as it is to continue on a new one with those things in mind, which are only possibilities to explore. This way I will paint more without getting too focused on each painting. My goal is to develop gesture and technic but above all work on compositions, to search and practice, to just paint for now !
This year I'm also mentally ready to try some acrylics or oil painting again. No other pressure...

I have a hard time to convince myself to sit in front of the computer since I came back from vacation, but here are two pages in my Moleskine I brought home from Mauritius. I could paint endless subjects there if I went for that and if I had another month to spend there. It's always complicated for me to isolate myself and paint on family vacation. But even so I do come back inspired, after a few weeks of contemplation and observation. I'm sure it leaves traces in the mind, when not on the paper. Weather was also a little complicated this year, but that's fine we had a great time anyway. A few more to come...
Air looked clear today and I couldn't resist the cloudy sky!
To be back in town is though as usual, far from mother nature. But this is where we work so I guess it will do for now. September as usual comes with a feeling of renewal, but this time there is some new things for real which makes it more exiting than usual to deal with. New working conditions might make a difference hopefully...

This isn't a resent page but the mood of the last days might be there. I haven't been able to work lately as I'm helping my daughter who's moving into her own place. I thing I'm little less than halfway now from moving myself back into my home studio where I can work again. I'm going away a long week to the south of France but I hope it will be all finished before the end of the month. I'm happy for my daughter who I think found a place and neighborhood where she will like to be. We can meet and have nice time together as long as she stays in Paris so I'm happy too although, as she says, maybe she's out for always. Hopefully, I wish for her.
Of course I'm also very pleased to be able to work in my own place soon!

Just found this other version from last autumn among sketchbook pages. Funny how different the colors and mood can be... and the sun is clearly lower in the sky...

New pages with exercises + "mini tutorial" videos in "Pratiques des Arts"
(N°134, June-July 2017)
An error though; a drawing of my friend and great artist Juankar Cardesin is published without giving his name. (in red circle below). My apologies to Juankar!
First time videos for me; one try one take! Not so easy to do this with a camera around my head!
This article talk about "gesture" I would rather say "fear"... as gesture comes after the fear is gone and confidence boosted. These exercises will treat your fear more than develop directly your gesture. To develop your gestures I would add the advice to work in standing position, with big sizes using your arm or body more than just hand.

Not so easy to paint landscapes, first to find an interesting view and then render what you see... adding what you need to make it work or not adding what doesn't. Often you just have a great time painting even if the result is not super interesting. This time it started to rain heavily and out of a blue sky, or was it me who was too busy to pay attention? Had to run to save everything from getting soaking wet in a second!
